Moab, Utah is the outdoor adventure capital of America in 2026. Two national parks (Arches and Canyonlands), world-class mountain biking, the Colorado River for rafting, and red rock landscapes that look like another planet. The essential Moab trip is 3-4 days: one day for Arches, one for Canyonlands, one for biking or rafting, and one for off-road exploration. Visit March-May or September-October — summer exceeds 100°F.

Arches National Park
Delicate Arch — the icon of Utah. The hike is 3 miles roundtrip with 480 feet of elevation gain. Go for sunset — the arch glows orange. Timed entry reservation required ($2 per vehicle on top of park pass).
Devils Garden Trail — 7.2 miles to see 8 arches including Landscape Arch (the longest natural arch in North America at 306 feet). The full primitive loop is challenging but extraordinary.
Windows Section — the easiest arches to see. 1-mile flat loop. Good for families and people with limited time.
Park tip: $30 per vehicle, valid 7 days. America the Beautiful pass ($80/year, covers all national parks) pays for itself in one trip if you visit both Arches and Canyonlands.
Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands is the bigger, wilder, less-visited sibling of Arches. Three districts:
- Island in the Sky — the most accessible. Mesa Arch (0.5-mile loop) at sunrise is one of the most photographed spots in the Southwest. Grand View Point overlook will leave you speechless.
- Needles — more remote, better for backpacking. The Chesler Park loop is spectacular.
- The Maze — one of the most remote places in the continental US. 4WD only. Multi-day commitment.
Mountain Biking
Slickrock Trail — the most famous mountain bike trail in the world. 10.5 miles of riding on petrified sand dunes. Not technically difficult but extremely exposed — bring 3+ liters of water.
Whole Enchilada — a 26-mile shuttle ride from the La Sal Mountains to the Colorado River, dropping 7,000 feet through 5 distinct ecosystems. One of the greatest MTB rides on Earth.
Porcupine Rim — 15 miles of singletrack ending at the Colorado River. Shuttle required.
Rafting
The Colorado River through Moab offers everything from calm float trips to Class III rapids:
- Half-day float — gentle, family-friendly, $50-70 per person
- Full-day Cataract Canyon — Class III-IV rapids, $175-250
- Multi-day trips — 3-5 day expeditions into Canyonlands backcountry, $800-1,500
